Corporate Line: Usher titled his album Confessions because he feels it’s his most personal yet. He wrote more songs on this one than on any previous album. “All of us have our Pandora’s boxes or skeletons in our closets,” he explained. “I let a few of them out, you know. I’ve got a lot to say. I’ve got a lot of things and stuff built in me that I just want to let go of.”
The Good:
“Truth Hurts” – The truth does hurt and Usher drops his baggage at the curb with a song about a cheating lover.
The Average:
“Yeah” – Lil Jon tries to rough up Usher’s style—it doesn’t work.
“Confession Part II” – Deals with unwanted pregnancy, sure Usher has to grow up sometime but this slow and serious side is a downer.
“Superstar” – Sexy, but where is the meat? Where is the hot melody? Where is the Usher we once knew?
“Burn” – Hot—could have been hotter.
“Do It To Me” – Usher breaks out a falsetto that might even make Michael Jackson jealous. It’s sexy and does what rare a song does today—leaves something to the imagination.
The Ugly:
“Bad Girl” – Dreadful. Not even Usher’s sweet voice can save it.
Frankly: Usher was great at dishing out dance jams. Confessions is slow and far from a dance record. The numerous ballads wear you down. Where did Usher’s spirit soar off to? We can only compare Usher to himself and this is not on par.
