CORPORATE LINE: A new record—here comes the piano man.
THE GREAT:
“Jesusland” – Irony in everything is the guide to Folds and his inspiration (“cross flying high above the malls”).
“Landed” – Folds addresses a lover and the mistakes that befell their relationship.
“Late” – Folds’ ode to Elliott Smith and it’s a sad reminder of the loss of another brilliant artist. (“The songs you wrote got me through a lot/ just wanted to tell you that/ but it’s too late”)
THE AVERAGE:
“Gracie” – A tender song written for his daughter.
THE BAD:
Nothing.
FRANKLY: Ben Folds could make an instrumental record of Songs for Silverman and it would still be worth a listen. The pianos clang on with such a beautiful melody that you can almost write your own words—perhaps it’s better than Folds does it for us.
