Beck continues to astound listeners. He always finds a way to stay ahead of the curve. Sea Change is certainly a change, but much for the better. There is no disco, nothing that really rocks, but the folk style seems to wear well.
The first thing you’ll notice is the sounds and the production, its no surprise that Nigel Godrich is leading this charge.
Great:
“Lost Cause” – Godrich pours it all over what might be Beck’s best performance to date.
“Already Dead” – It really hurts. But pain can feel really good sometimes.
“The Golden Age” – Aside from the glorious music Beck’s voice seems to have gone to another level.
“Sunday Sun” – Although he sounds drunk the track is sensational.
“Guess I’m Doing Fine” – “It’s only tears that I’m crying/It’s only you that I’m losing/Guess I’m doing fine”. Even Beck fears failing.
Good:
“Lonesome Tear” – You have to feel it.
“It’s All In Your Mind” – Haunting.
Bad:
Nothing.
It seems weird to compare Beck to Pink Floyd because he’s never done anything that even resembles them. Sea Change has a real Syd Barrett flavor and that alone speaks volumes about where Beck has and can go.
