As a youth, Micah LeVar Troy grew up in the well-known College Park area of Atlanta, where he was exposed to the street life at an early age. His father, a former drill sergeant turned pastor, made sure Troy was exposed to the church life as well, though. These two often contrasting lifestyles presented a constant dilemma for Troy: he was drawn to street culture and, in particular, his Geto Boys and N.W.A. albums, but his father wouldn’t allow the music to be played in the family’s home.
Hard:
“Universal Soldier” – The beats hit, but its Troy’s rhymes that keep it all together.
“Tell ‘Em It’s On” – Hot hook.
“If They Kill Me” – Troy’s voice sounds like he swallowed broken glass.
Mainstream:
“Bless America” – A hook taken from Hulk Hogan’s WWF days circa 1990.
“Are We Cuttin’ ”
“If I Wasn’t Rappin’ ”
“Chug-A-Lug”
Soft:
“Who, What, When, Where”
“When He Comes”
Pastor Troy seems to be working his way closer to radio. The songs often come off pretty plain.
