Pink – I’m Not Dead

Pink
Artist: Pink
Title: I’m Not Dead
Label: Jive
Rating: 6/10

FILE UNDER: A poppier Pink

CORPORATE LINE: Proving she’s got much more than just a pulse, Pink rails against politicians and a culture that breeds bulimia and rampant materialism on her fourth record, I’m Not Dead. The Indigo Girls sing along on “Dear Mr. President,” while the singer’s father appears on the hidden track “I Have Seen the Rain.” Get totally Pink’d with the DualDisc, which has a promo clip and making-of segments for her single “Stupid Girls,” plus interview footage and a teaser for her forthcoming “Live in Europe” DVD.

THE GOOD:
“Stupid Girls” – Pink drops a classic line (“What happened to the dream of a girl president?/ She’s dancing in the video next to 50 Cent”) while nailing both the truth and the melody. Pink knows how to make hits.
“I Have Seen The Rain” F/James T. Moore – A lovely hidden song but you have to wonder if Pink fans will enjoy this song considering her voice is barely audible over her father’s.

THE AVERAGE:
“The One That Got Away” – The song isn’t unique however the vocal style is completely different for Pink. Pink takes it to the side of Melissa Etheridge and it sounds fabulous. It’d be interesting to hear an entire album similar to this track.
“U + Ur Hand” – Pink doesn’t shy away from taking people to task as she sends men looking for a hook up and leaving them alone with only their, umm, hand for pleasure.
“Dear Mr. President” f/Indigo Girls – Honestly, the sentiment is well placed—however the song is as far from a protest song as there’s ever been. The idea of bringing the Indigo Girls into the fold was definitely an attempt at gaining credibility.
“I Got Money Now” – It’s hard to tell if Pink is whining or not about having money. She seems to take the irony of having money but at the same time being envied and ignored because she has it all.
“Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely)” – It’s pure pop and as sweet as can be and as underwhelming as the lyrics are Pink still elevates the song with her great vocals.
“Runaway” – A completely mind-numbing pop song—next time Pink should let this one go to Britney.

THE BAD:
None.

FRANKLY: “Nobody Knows” proves that Pink has a huge voice. She is a brilliant vocalist—too bad these songs aren’t much better. I’m Not Dead may prove she’s still alive—but it doesn’t prove she can still rock.
