Poole’s third full-length album, Among Whom We Shine, is a classic product of the ’90’s pop music scene. The music is loaded with catchy pop-hooks, melodies, and distinctive vocal harmonies that bounce between frontman and drummer Harry Evans (formerly of The Lilys) and his bandmates. Bill Campbell (guitar), Dean Nitz (bass), and Harv Evans (Harry’s brother, lead guitar) round out the rest of the band.
The harmonies that are a trademark of Poole’s sound can be similarly related to Beach Boys “Pet Sounds”, with a modern Sugar or Matthew Sweet vibe. Poole has musical talent, but many tracks on the album tend to start with the same musical structure in the form of either a poppy drumbeat or a quick guitar hook. The fast and up-beat tunes will draw you in, but the songs fail to deliver. This aside, “Sole Operator” and the title track, “Among Whom We Shine”, are well-crafted pieces of work. Listen to “Fall For Anything” and tell me if it wouldn’t be the absolutely perfect opening theme of a game show. All things considered, Poole has a bright future with the college radio fanbase because of their pop sound and groove.
