Right from go, vocalist Monique Powell hooks you with her sugary siren call on “Turn It Up”. Then comes a little bit of Sublime mixed with straight rock ‘n’ roll on my favorite track, “The Only Way To Be”. “I’m Not Cryin’ For You” is another great track. Usually I’m bored by now and have already rewritten the band biography just to pass my time; here I can’t help but catch myself singing along.
Just as I felt settled in, “Angry Situation” came along. Prepare to march with “What You See Is What You Get”, and then sit right down and take a breath as “One More Try” calms you down for a matter of seconds, only to be thrown back into the fire with “Mistaken”. The album ends on a low note. “Let Me In” isn’t bad; it is actually very good. It’s just that after being rocked so much, I would have rather been left to my own devices with a crazy step in my stride, not with a bitter taste on my tongue. Of course there is a hidden track that revs, but it isn’t the same when you have to wait five minutes for it to make its appearance. Besides, you should just let the hidden track stay hidden. You won’t be missing a thing.
Even though I know nearly nothing about Save Ferris, I can say that Modified is damn good. I did find their first release to be annoying and often found myself gritting my teeth to get through it, but here I was actually entertained. Their ska barometer has dropped and they have begun to rock. They’ve given up the covers and gone original. Thank God for that.
