GAME DESCRIPTION: Crime Life: Gang Wars is a free-roaming, crime-based beat-em-up with an engaging story from start to finish. The game focuses on the writes of passage of Tre, the new pretender to the crown of gang leader. Incorporating traditional beat-em-up action with a gritty, detailed storyline, players delve into modern-day urban gang culture.
PLAY: Your goal is to join the Outlawz gang which is similar to the core of Grand Theft Auto where your missions are set up for you to appease a gang. Unlike GTA, the story is weak and you can’t steal cars—in fact you can’t even drive a car. The entire game is about fighting and killing—it’s all about the thug life
Fighting is extremely simple. There are a few combos and a special attack. That’s pretty much it—don’t expect anything too exciting. There are also weapons that can speed up the process of killing the bad guys. One weapon is a sword—odd considering you are in a street gang. When was the last time you heard that a sword was used in a gang killing? There are also guns with limited ammo making most weapons useless.
There is a major lack of creativity with Crime Life. The gang members all look identical—and then there are the areas like Blingsley Hills—which represents the rich side of town. Apparently no one could come up with a better name. We wondered if Rich Town, Moneyville or Cashport were taken.
The maps are open and experience tells us that it should make for a wide-open and exciting game. Instead it borders on awful. One problem is you’re never sure what you should be doing. Fighting is fun until you realize you’re not sure what to do next.
GRAPHICS: Nearly all the models look like clones of other members of that gang. The many different gangs are all clichés. The graphics are weak and the environments are boring and offer no detail.
SOUND: The soundtrack is tired with the same old clichéd hip-hop.
FRANKLY: Even fans of gang-style games will be bored in under an hour. Crime Life: Gang Wars might have been interesting had it been released before Grant Theft Auto 3.
