PLAY: In typical EA fashion they took all the good from previous releases and have added some new features.

The biggest addition is the lockdown stick. This allows you to control the defender in a more physical manner. You can now press up on the offensive player and bump them and cause strips and turnovers. This can be a fun addition except when you get burned. It’s easy to misstep and get burned by a quick offensive player. It’s risk and reward. You might make the strip but you might be the reason they score.

The biggest plus is the recruiting. This is very similar to NCAA Football. The biggest disappointment is the dynasty mode. The biggest problem is discipline points. As a coach we should be able to discipline at will or take it out. To put restrictions on this makes no sense. Even worse are the silly scenarios. Sure, college kids get into trouble but no matter what school you coach your students get into trouble. Can’t we get a school that has no trouble? Honestly, I could care less about this. I just want to play some ball.

GRAPHICS: I truly hope the lack of graphical upgrades has to do more with EA spending time on the Xbox 360 games because March Madness 06 isn’t impressive to look at. EA has a long history of knocking it out of a park but lately the games of all their sports releases have lacked—and often look just like their previous releases. The players are poorly detailed. The animations for the lockdown stick are nice but it’s not enough to want to make me purchase this year’s version.

SOUND: The college atmosphere translates well. This is the real area that shines in the 06 version. One question: Would you buy a game for the way it sounds? We wouldn’t. Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale are great as usual.

FRANKLY: NCAA March Madness is the game I look forward to every year because I’m a huge college basketball fan and having gone to a college with a history of national champions (Kansas). But just like last year I’m left disappointed.
