Busta Rhymes seems to have just gotten comfortable on his new label, J Records. Genesis is an album that we haven’t had from Busta in a few years. It’s progressive, it’s raw, but it’s also lacking.
Busta doesn’t seem to know where this Genesis was to go. He bounces from Dr. Dre to Pete Rock to the Neptunes right into home with Puffy. There are good tracks, from “Break Ya Neck” to “Betta Stay Up In Your House” to “What It Is”. There is the fresh “Ass On Your Shoulders”, but then failing tracks like “Shut ‘Em Down”, a poor excuse for a Public Enemy rip.
Genesis fails in many areas, most being the huge drop-off in quality tracks toward the end. Busta has always been a little inconsistent, but Genesis takes the cake. Previous Busta attempts have had at least a few great songs, some good and then a couple bad. Here we are given more of the average and far too many of the bad.
