Street Fighter Alpha Anthology

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Game: Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Platform: PS2
Studio: Capcom
Rating: 7/10

GAME DESCRIPTION: The Street Fighter Alpha Anthology brings five prized fighters united for the first time. This is an arcade-perfect compilation of Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold and Street Fighter Alpha 3. Choose from a cast of 13 characters from the collective Street Fighter Universe: Ryu, Chun-Li, Ken, Charlie plus 9 more. This title introduces the use of super combos and alpha counters to add new dimensions to fighting. As an added bonus the “pint-sized” Super Gem Fighter MiniMix (released on consoles as Pocket Fighter) is also included.

PLAY: Street Fighter fans will find a lot of fun to be had with this Anthology. There are a few games that gamers may not have played and that add even more value. One of those games is Super Gem Fighter MiniMix. Then there are the games gamers have played either at home or in the arcade such as Street Fighter Alpha 2.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 is the signature game. Alpha 2 is still a lot of fun and it’s easy to see how this game influenced a lot of fighting games. All of the Alpha games are fun—but Alpha 2 is still the best of all three games. To really entice gamers Capcom has included a lot of unlockable features and characters.

GRAPHICS: It’s hard to convince the new generation to play a game that is such a huge step-back graphically—especially with the advent of the Xbox 360. It might be easier to sell this game on the PSP than on the PS2. However, gamers that grew up with the Street Fighter series will love this release and might be surprised how good the game looks on the PS2. That said, it’s hard to play the game after bouncing from the Xbox 360. As much as I wanted to have fun there was still a yearning for high def.

SOUND: The voices and soundtrack aren’t going to blow anyone away—they are what they are. Capcom wasn’t about to remake the entire game.

FRANKLY: Fans will probably be the only buyers for the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology. Teenagers will find this game intolerable with all the amazing looking games coming out every month.
