Game Company’s Description: Sonic Battle™ brings furious combat action to the Game Boy Advance, as Sonic and his friends set out to determine which one of them is really the best fighter! Choose from eight characters such as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Choose the arena, set the rules, customize your special attacks, and then engage in non-stop battles. With three types of special attacks, as well as Ground, Aerial, and Defense fighting techniques, you can customize your character to suit your fighting style. You’ll also need to strategically plan and execute your attacks to take full advantage of each character’s unique abilities. Up to four friends can link their systems together using the Game Boy Advance Game Link® cable for team battles, and then combine special attacks into devastating combos! If you prefer to battle solo, work through the Story Mode to develop your own AI fighting partner. Either way, Sonic Battle is the ultimate showdown between Sonic and his friends.
Look: The pseudo 3D arenas are well done and a great use of the Z-Axis. The camera has issues with keeping up. The quirk doesn’t ruin the game but trying to stay within sight can be a chore. The graphics are very well done with smoothing issues keeping it from being perfect.
Feel: Very well done controls that work as they should. Blocking is tough to grasp. Blocking takes some good timing. The fighting is the best aspect of the game. The story mode isn’t quite as creative. Trying to earn new skills is a task and a half. The abilities seem to cost more than they are worth – especially if it takes you a few hours to build up, which it will.
Hear: Great character voices – poor music.
Frankly: Sonic Battle is one of the best GBA games released in some time. With such a great engine you’re sure to get hours of enjoyment.
