Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 tries to pick up where the first movie left off. So what do you do for an encore after such a hugely successful freshman offering? I guess if director Joe Berlinger and writers Jon Bokenkamp and Neal Stevens knew, they wouldn’t have made the movie I saw. Even though they had a tough hill to climb after such a phenomenon, they never once got off the ground.
The film lands us in Burkittsville, Maryland, which has been overrun by tourists trying to find out more about the Blair Witch. It’s a great opener that had me expecting this movie to continue in an exciting fashion, but I found out I was in for a long, boring ride.
The sequel tries hard to keep the mystique and creepiness of the original, but it instead churns out a hokey, unbelievable, and plain old lame movie. Now it is creepy, but without all the excitement and mystery which seeps out like the air in a party balloon days after its shining moment. The movie goes nowhere. It doesn’t explain anything more that I could care about and left me utterly unamused.
The characters where unimpressive, clich, and uninteresting. They couldn’t scare children lost in a forest, let alone anyone in the theater. Okay, that was harsh, but I guess this film has left a really bitter taste in my mouth. They had the greatest setup in the world and a huge franchise to uphold, but they fumbled the ball so hard that it may never be able to escape the smoldering ruins.
