Zathura

Zathura
Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Jonah Bobo, Dax Shepard
Studio: Columbia
Rating: 7/10

CORPORATE LINE: In the heart-racing sci-fi adventure Zathura, two squabbling brothers are propelled into deepest, darkest space while playing a mysterious game they discovered in the basement of their old house.

On their fantastic journey, they are joined by a stranded astronaut and must survive meteor showers, hostile lizard-like aliens, a rocket-propelled robot run amok and an intergalactic spaceship battle.

But their greatest peril lies ahead. Unless they finish the game and reach the planet Zathura, they are doomed to be trapped in outer space forever.

THE MOVIE: Zathura is a thrill for kids. Right from the beginning you are blasted from Earth and the film never stops moving. Zathura appeals to a small segment of 8-12 year olds. Anyone younger might find it scary and anyone older might find the film uninteresting. Director Jon Favreau does a brilliant job of keeping viewers engaged even when the action isn’t dominating. Space, robots, and tons of action—what’s not to love?

FRANKLY: Zathura isn’t without a pedigree—author Chris Van Allsburg wrote Jumanji and Polar Express. Zathura is a good family film.
