CORPORATE LINE: Based on the best-selling novel by Lauren Weisberger, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA stars two-time Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep as high-powered fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly. Anne Hathaway also stars, as Miranda’s new assistant, a small-town girl in her first job out of college, trying to navigate a world she’s only glimpsed in print – while surviving her impossibly demanding new boss.
REVIEW: Anyone that has been to Conde Nast’s office in Manhattan knows that most of the men and woman that come and go look as they are portrayed in the film. When I visited the office years ago and met a friend outside he asked “is everyone here a model?”
Guys will think The Devil Wears Prada is little more than a chick flick—that’s a wrong assumption. It’s about a girl who has hopes and dreams and is willing to fight to achieve them. This isn’t a romantic film or one that will make you weep. If anything, guys will be stunned by how much fun The Devil Wears Prada ends up being.
First of all—Meryl Streep is spectacular. This is an Oscar worthy performance. Streep devours each scene with her wickedness. Anne Hathaway does well to hold her own—but Streep is the reason to watch. Streep is so good that it’s definitely a movie that can be seen a few times.
There are very few slow spots—all of which deal with Miranda and her boyfriend. The boyfriend is inserted as nothing more than a reminder of how hard Miranda is working and gives up everything for her job. But every time we leave Miranda’s work the film slows to a grinding halt.
FRANKLY: The Devil Wears Prada is wickedly smart, funny, and sassy. Streep’s Oscar worthy performance sells a movie that might have otherwise been simply average.
