CORPORATE LINE: The Hundred Acre Wood crew is together again in POOH’S HEFFALUMP MOVIE, this time learning the life lesson of being accepting of others differences and the value of true friendship.
Awakened by a rumbling that could only be made by the much-feared Heffalump, Pooh, Piglet, and Tigger set out to capture the creature once and for all. Disregarded as too young to partake in such a dangerous expedition, Roo opts to search on his own — with far greater success than his friends. In meeting a young, playful Heffalump named Lumpy, Roo quickly learns an important lesson: Heffalumps are nothing like what he’s been told, and he has much more to gain by befriending Lumpy than fearing him. Roo and Lumpy strike up a sweet friendship and work together to dispel the unfounded fears of their respective friends and families.
THE GOOD: As with all Pooh films there is a message—and a cute one at that. The new character Lumpy has one of the cutest laughs you’ll hear. Lumpy the Heffalump who lives in the woods is believed to be some sort of scary monster by Pooh and gang—but Little Roo discovers the truth. The notion that little children can look beyond the surface to see what is on the inside is a good lesson even while you never quite feel like you are being taught.
FRANKLY: Anyone over the age of twelve is certainly not qualified to review this film—so I let my daughter’s reaction tell the real story. The entire ride home was discussions of her new imaginary Heffalump friend. It also revived a renewed interest in her Pooh books and movies. She even drew a Heffalump when she got home and named it. I would have forgotten this film quickly however my daughter never let that happen—that alone proves how much children love Pooh and how much she loved the Heffalump movie.
By the way—a good indicator of a children’s film is that the theater is quiet except for the laughs—and Pooh’s Heffalump Movie passed that test with flying colors.
