Ryan Adams & The Cardinals’ Cardinology has entered the Billboard Top 200 at #11, selling in excess of 40,000 copies since its October 28 release and the second highest chart debut of Ryan’s career, the first being last year’s Easy Tiger which bowed at #7.

A limited edition vinyl version of Cardinology was released this week, featuring exclusive cover artwork by illustrator Leah Hayes, renowned for her Fantagraphics graphic novels Funeral of the Heart and Holy Moly, among other works.

The Cardinals, who are comprised of Adams, Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Chris Feinstein (bass, vocals), Jon Graboff (pedal steel, vocals) and Brad Pemberton (drums), are about to embark on a UK headlining tour, which will be followed by a North American trek supporting Oasis. Dates for an early 2009 U.S. headline tour will be announced shortly.

Cardinology is the latest installation of the Ryan Adams & The Cardinals canon that includes Easy Tiger, 29, Jacksonville City Nights, Cold Roses, Love Is Hell, Rock N Roll, Demolition, Gold and Heartbreaker. Adams explains the record’s title as “the study of this band, the research and development of jam technology–Jam meaning equal part songwriting and jamming. Some people say meaningful things all the time but never say them quite the same way twice. So it’s the science of applying that to music and never playing anything the same way twice.”
