Dinah Washington was given the title of “Queen Of The Blues”. One listen to The Definitive Dinah Washington and you quickly understand why.
Amazing:
“What A Difference A Day Made” – Essential listening. This will blow your mind.
“This Bitter Earth” – You’ll get goosebumps.
“Evil Gal Blues” – Gorgeous, but not without the hiss from the old recordings.
“Embraceable You” – Washington’s rendition shows why she was dubbed the queen of the blues.
“Unforgettable” – Dinah holds this song strongly against the great Nat King Cole rendition.
“My Ideal” – Her voice will melt your heart.
“I Don’t Hurt Anymore” – Washington blasts off and you feel like she finally has a chance to really get loose.
“Our Love Is Here To Stay” – Classic.
“Big Long Slidin’ Thing” – Addictive.
“Baby, You’ve Got What It Takes” – Grand duet with Brooke Benton.
The only real let down is “Evil Gal Blues” and its surface noise, even though they make note of it on the record, and the fact that “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” is tough to swallow. Aside from those few annoyances this is a wonderful record. Dinah Washington was a diva before they used the word and The Definitive collection is pure musical addiction.
