The Foo Fighters are well known. They write catchy hooks, which turn into hit singles. Dave Grohl has seemingly taken a different approach to One By One. It’s subtle, but strong and not the typical Foo you’ve come to know and love.
The Good:
“Low” – Love is a bitch. So are all those clingy bastards. This is another seemingly understated track, but the more you listen to it the more you will find yourself enjoying it.
“Tired Of You” – It seems that love has Grohl wrapped up in joy and pain, but these emotions are making for the records best tracks.
The Average:
“Overdrive” – “We’re going life or death”. Think “Monkey Wrench”.
“All My Life” – Very understated, but if you listen close you’ll find there is a lot going on here. Troubles? You bet.
“Halo” and “Lonely As You” – Leans toward Foo slow tracks of the past but seem more introspective than those of the past.
“Have It All” – Ripe twang on the guitars push the track on.
“Come Back” – Looking for something to lose. And when you burn away from the flames you will come back for the one you love. “Dead on the inside, I’ve got nothing to prove/Keep me alive and give me something to lose”. Haunting.
The Ugly:
Nothing.
It might take a few listens before you find yourself even interested, but the time is well spent. One By One is certainly their least obvious record without any certain hit singles. Don’t be fooled however, even without that hit there is a lot more to hear if you are willing to listen.
