K.D. Lang’s latest release has a running theme: Love. Newfound love mostly, but also the act of falling deeper. On Invincible Summer, Lang brings sunny skies and warm surf.
“Summer Fling” is, as Lang says, “about how being in love makes you feel like it’s summer all the time.” It does glitter, and even the harp and keys dance atop a flowery august breeze. “It’s Happening With You” has a Jamiroquai groove with an atmosphere of freedom all over it.
Love is many things, but Lang’s metaphor, “Love’s Great Ocean”, is deep and intriguing. My favorite track is in fact the most inspiring and deep on the album, “Only Love”. There hasn’t been a truer statement said than this: “only love can bring you down/ only love brings you back around.” Lang has a keen sense of melody, but an even better ability to put life into lyrics.
