Singer/songwriter Musiq Soulchild, born Taalib Johnson, picks artistry over melody and melody over artistry. Whatever you call Aijuswannasing, you have to call it simply soulful with a real nod to Stevie Wonder and the soul from that extremely fruitful era.
“You And Me” brings the soul to life, preparing you for deeper sets like “143”, “Mary Go Round”, and “Love”, all with an obvious Stevie Wonder influence, not to mention a little Marvin Gaye.
The single from Nutty Professor II, “Just Friends”, is in there too, There is so much to discuss and so few words to exam the full effect. I can’t help but listen to tracks like “My Girl”, “Seventeen”, and “You’re Alright” over and over again.
With a flavorful voice and lots of soul, Musiq Soulchild brings a style once thought lost in popular music. Music wasn’t always shameless nonsense and Musiq proves it isn’t a lost art.
