Simian – Chemistry Is What We Are

Simian
Artist: Simian
Title: Chemistry Is What We Are
Label: Astralwerks
Rating: 9/10

Simian is almost as odd as their music, neither of which I can quite figure out.

“Drop And Roll” starts completely disjointed but lands clear in a lush chorus that strikes hard as feathers. “The Wisp” is glorious, almost spiritual in its grandeur. Simian find melody in the strangest sounds, from a seeming car repair, horses galloping over wood, and an organ that feels like it could awaken the dead.

There are songs like “How Could I Be Right”, which sounds like a normal song from a normal group, and then you get snatched back to the reality that is Simian’s own on “One Dimension”. Still, as off the wall as it is, it’s endless in its beauty.

The US release comes with two bonus tracks and they are truly bonuses. “The Tale Of Willow Hill” is one of the album’s most glorious and giant pieces. Simian has a uniqueness that makes them stand out, and they have the ability to keep themselves standing out.
