Company Line: It’s summertime and the living is easy – what better time then for the sun-bleached sounds of Sugar Ray’s “IN THE PURSUIT OF LEISURE”? The South California fivesome’s eagerly awaited fifth album – the follow-up to 2001’s million-selling “SUGAR RAY” – finds the band in a characteristically sunshiny state of mind, blending laidback island rhythms, funky hip-hop grooves, and infectious ’80s-inspired melodies into their uniquely delicious pop/rock cocktail.
The Good:
“Chasin’ You Around” – Saccharine. Bubble Gum. Pop-rock. Yet it still catches you.
The Marginal:
“Mr Bartender (It’s So Easy)” – Okay hook, but you have to wonder if it was worth these guys selling their souls.
“Can’t Start” – Could cause your head to explode.
The Ugly:
“Is She Really Going Out With Him?” – Dreadful, even Rick Springfield would reject this one.
“Photograph Of You” – Yawn.
“Whatever We Are” – You have got to be kidding me. Could Mark McGrath’s vocals sound any worse?
Frankly: Sugar Ray proves again they are at least good for one song an album. At least they are consistent.
