PLAY: Godfather the game sticks very close to the original film except that you play the role of an unknown character of your design. This character plays a significant in role the overall story. Surprisingly, the character works well within the story and doesn’t seem out of place.
Your character’s job is to strong arm and intimidate any that gives the family problems. You are on the lowest rung and work your way up by taking over stores and running illegal gambling and prostitution. There are other instances where your character is injected into original film scenes such as the famous horse head in the bed scene.
EA took one of the most popular games in history in Grand Theft Auto and utilized that strategy for The Godfather. A lot of what can be done in GTA have carried over to The Godfather. You can steal cars, shoot people, run people over, and more. None of it is scripted which adds to the sense of being in control the game even though that’s not exactly accurate.
You are able to lock on targets when using guns. For the most part, aiming is similar to GTA. Locking is always easier but you can still aim with the left stick. There is a plethora of weapons from a tommy gun to dynamite. What makes The Godfather different from GTA is that you are rewarded for killing with gaining respect. One of the coolest ways of killing is throwing a thug off a roof. That’s something new.
GRAPHICS: Many of the characters resemble their onscreen counterparts. The environment of New York City in the ‘30s is amazingly detailed. EA did a great job in recreating the city—although we’re not sure how accurate it is.
SOUND: The voice acting is amazing and the music is straight from the film.
FRANKLY: The Godfather is all about earning respect. You earn your respect from extortion and brutal murders. Because The Godfather uses the GTA engine there is a lot of playtime. Fans of the film will love The Godfather while those who aren’t fans might find it to be little more than a GTA rip-off.
