GAME DESCRIPTION: When life robs Colton White of all that matters, the only thing left he can trust is his GUN. From award-winning developer, Neversoft, and accomplished screenwriter, Randall Jahnson (The Mask of Zorro, The Doors), GUN follows Colton on his quest for discovery as he seeks to exact vengeful justice on those who have wronged him. GUN is a realistic epic action/adventure that lets gamers experience the brutality of the lawless West.
* New and savage ways to punish: Stealthily sneak up and attack your enemies, use them as cover, stab, shoot, or scalp them. Blast away and watch the aftermath, shoot guns out of enemy hands, or destroy with dynamite.
* Extensive variety of missions and game play: Wage war on horseback, commandeer trains, protect whores, collect bounties, play poker, hunt buffalo, and more. Multiple game play styles include: precision shooting, stealth tactics, and use of explosives.
Embark on numerous side missions that allow you to master gun slinging and horse riding. Unlock secret weapons and upgrade your skills and abilities to improve your weapon and equipment performance.
* Brutal realism: Act as a gunslinger protecting righteousness, or seek retribution as you face corrupt lawmen, warring tribes, cold-blooded outlaws, and ruthless renegades. Encounter legendary gunfighters such as JJ Webb. Employ a multitude of authentic weapons including: Six shooters, shotguns, Gatling guns, flaming arrows, hatchets, dynamite, and more.
* Expansive interactive world: Play an extensive variety of exciting missions as you journey west across the new frontier. Ride on horseback through the scenic, yet dangerous Western terrain of canyons, mountains, plains, forests, gold mines and towns.
PLAY: Maybe its Deadwood and its salty language that’s made us want more westerns. Gun tries to fill that void. The story is one reason to play. The story isn’t unlike a movie with its many plot twists and great characters that keep you interested.
You start out in Dodge City and as you progress more areas open up for play. Even though some of the story lines are cliché the stories are still good enough to keep gamers interested.
Since this is a western you’ll do a lot of shooting. You have “Quick Draw” which allows you to slow time to get a better shot. It fixes one of the biggest problems with most shooters—accuracy. As a cowboy you’ll get to ride a horse—yeehaw! This is actually one of the best aspects of the game.
GRAPHICS: The environments are lacking detail—particularly for a next generation console. This is where Gun could have really separated itself from other games. There are many areas that could have been better detailed such as the towns and prairies and wildlife. More detail certainly would have upped the quality of gameplay. Most of the characters look creepy as if they were from a horror movie and wearing rubber masks.
For a next generation game this doesn’t look a whole generation better than the PS2 or Xbox release. There are some cleaner animations and texture—but it doesn’t feel like a complete overhaul.
SOUND: The voice acting is quite good and the soundtrack is perfect for this western.
FRANKLY: Gun could have been great. Gun is the sort of game that could have been the cornerstone for the Xbox 360. There is a lot of good things about Gun—but not enough of them or a consistent amount of greatness. Worse yet is Gun can be finished in roughly eleven hours and overall it’s the same as the other console releases with slightly better graphics.
