GAME DESCRIPTION: X-Men 3: The Official Movie Game provides the back-story for the upcoming X-Men: The Last Stand feature film. For the first time ever, the game enables players to truly command the powers of popular characters from the X-Men movie universe. Players will assume the roles of Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Iceman as they wield and upgrade their signature powers and maneuver through unique environments. Hack and slash with Wolverines brute strength to decimate foes; as Nightcrawler, players will scale walls, spin and BAMF through environments to stay one step ahead of enemies; and experience incredible speed on Iceman’s ice slide while shooting ice beams and creating hailstorms to freeze the opposition. You’ll get to experience the X-Men universe in amazing HD — an Xbox 360 exclusive. Features voice acting by stars of the film, like Patrick Stewart.
PLAY: X-Men games have traditionally been a lot of fun which made the X-Men coming to Xbox 360 hugely anticipated. With so many characters and the vastness of the environments this could have been killer—were it not so easy and the enemies so ridiculously stupid.
This release of the X-Men is easy enough for kids and not nearly enough of a challenge for adults. Mashing the buttons is the extent of gameplay. On the plus side you can control a few characters; Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Iceman. It sounds better than it is. The only one of the three that is always fun to control is Nightcrawler. Even if X-Men 3: The Official Game did nothing more than take the actions from previous releases and dropped them into a new shiny shell and environments the game would have been better than this. The only cool part of controlling Iceman is his ability to surf on ice.
Even if the game was button mashing it could have add more depth with puzzles and tougher enemies. Most of the enemies are waiting to die. They don’t offer any degree of challenge. There are a few extras that can be unlocked.
GRAPHICS: The X-Men games are often very good looking games, however after playing Final Fantasy XI and calling that the worst looking game on the 360 we might have to change our view. The X-Men 3: The Official Game might be the worst looking release to date for the 360.
SOUND: Patrick Stewart helps the dialogue by offering nice voice acting; however the rest of the soundtrack is uninspired.
FRANKLY: Having played the game without seeing the film there is concern about the game and the movie. The game isn’t good—boy, I hope the movie isn’t this bad.
