GAME DESCRIPTION: Torino 2006 – the Official Video Game of the Olympic Winter Games is an arcade simulation of the most popular winter sports that will be showcased at next years Olympic Winter Games. The player is placed at the center of sporting events which will be broadcast live around the world. The excitement of this major international competition is portrayed authentically with commentators, TV cameras, and spectators. An exciting multiplayer mode for up to four players provides party fun and long lasting motivation with 8 different disciplines over 15 different events.
PLAY: Fifteen events from the winter Olympics. There are a lot of potentially cool events. Many events such as the luge and bobsled are nearly identical. The rest of the game is about precision. Nearly every other Olympic game required beating the buttons into submission—Torino is more about timing.
Many of the events are boring. Bobsledding and luge are less than dynamic. You simple steer into the corners. The skiing isn’t much better as you cut into the corners and steer—not much unlike the bobsledding and luge. Cross country skiing and the other variations such as biathlon and Nordic require you to save energy to make it through the event.
GRAPHICS: Torino looks better than it plays.
SOUND: The commentary is lackluster. Without the ability to actually discuss the athletes as are done in the real broadcast there is little commentary other than a few comments such as “Oh no” and “fantastic!”
FRANKLY: Torino 2006 isn’t fun. It’s not even worth renting.
