Doom

Doom
Cast: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike, Ben Daniels, Razaaq Adoti
Studio: Sony
Rating: 1/10

THE GOOD: It was less than 2 hours, and Karl Urban is very attractive.

THE BAD: This movie was so bad I don’t even know where to begin. Nevertheless, let’s start with the plot. But seriously, what plot? The storyline was such a rip-off! Doom was a complete, and horrendous, combination of Alien, 28 Days Later, and Night of the Living Dead, and let’s not forget the monster that literally spits out tongues at people who have the tendency towards evil.

John Grimm (Karl Urban), or “Reaper” as he is known by his squad, and Dr. Grimm (Rosamund Pike) turn in uninspired performances and act more like estranged lovers than the siblings they are supposed to be. I wouldn’t be surprised if in Doom 4 that John and Dr. Grimm find out they were both adopted and get hitched, it would make more sense and be interesting at least!

In the meantime, every other supporting character fails to earn any sympathy before their inevitable elimination. Sarge (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), however, shows some substance by turning into a fanatic soldier at the end and swearing every 10 seconds (parents take heed!)

The film’s sole highlight is a five-minute sequence towards the end of the film depicted from the first person perspective, a la the game: weapons are chosen, creatures are killed gruesomely and the audience gets a break from the monotony of the previous hour and a half.

FRANKLY (THE UGLY): Every aspect of this dim-witted movie was a waste of time and money. If you are in the mood for a movie, see something else; this is DOOMed to fail!
