CORPORATE LINE: Popular Chicago weatherman, Dave Spritz, has a shot at the big time when a national morning television show calls him for an audition. Professionally, Dave is on the top of the world, but his personal life is in complete disarray. Dave’s painful divorce, his dad’s illness and trouble with his kids have him poised on the knife’s edge between stability and disaster. The harder he tries to control events, the more he finds life, like the weather, is completely unpredictable.
THE GOOD: Seeing that the kid from “About a Boy” is all grown up.
THE BAD: I am beginning to hate Nicolas Cage. He’s been such a pathetic loser in his last couple of films, he really needs to get a better agent. Where are the parts he shines in, like “Honeymoon in Vegas” or even “Moon Struck”? I say enough of the stupid, directionless, bad-haired characters Cage has been playing! But back to the point, this movie was a total failure.
It jumps around chronologically – I mean there are good displays of this in “Memento”, “Pulp Fiction” or either of the “Kill Bill’s”, but “The Weatherman” never progresses or even develops plot. I still don’t even know what I watched: a kid in rehab, a daughter called Camel Toe, an attempted rape, a trip to New York, or archery.
In addition, it is filled with pointless vulgarity that is obviously inserted for a shock value. Not only does it fail to add any substance to the film, the viewer is just left wondering why it was used at all. The film is slow, boring and pointless with Cage narrating throughout. But seriously, what’s the deal with the archery??
FRANKLY: I wouldn’t even waste my money renting it. Wait until it’s on USA.
