Uptown Girls

Uptown Girls
Cast: Brittany Murphy, Dakota Fanning
Studio: MGM
Rating: 5/10

Corporate Line: Molly Gunn (Murphy) is the freewheeling daughter of a late rock legend and the toast of the Manhattan social scene, but when her inheritance is stolen, Molly is forced to do something she’s never done before – get a job. She becomes nanny to precocious Ray Schleine (Fanning), an “eight-year-old going on forty.” Emotionally distant from her A&R executive mother Roma (Locklear), Ray has grown up with a revolving door of nannies and too little stability. Molly and Ray both feel painfully alone in the world, but as they try to make their new arrangement work, each discovers in the other a true friend.

The Good: Cute. Dakota Fanning is a doll and plays the smart-alec kid with perfection. Brittany Murphy does her job in this all-too-cutesy film. We won’t think about it long after we’ve seen it but for a few moments this film will warm your heart and maybe tear your eye. Well that is a little over-dramatic. Murphy is good as the ditzy, flower child. Some may say she acts a fool – but that is what she was asked to do.

The Bad: Uptown Girls is very tacky. The songs that were written for the ‘cool’ guitar guy are mortifying. Murphy gets annoying quick.

Frankly: If you’re a guy you just might find yourself wondering why your wife/girlfriend/daughter/insert-someone-female-here brought you to this film, but I will say they’ll be walking out with a smile. With that said the film isn’t great, in fact it’s quite average.
