Mudcrutch – Mudcrutch – music review

Artist: Mudcrutch
Title: Mudcrutch
Label: Warner Bros.
Rating: 7/10

Corporate line:
“I just finished a record with Mudcrutch, my old band before the Heartbreakers. I am over the moon about it. I couldn’t have hoped for it to be as good as it came out.” In summer 2007, Tom Petty reunited Mudcrutch, consisting of himself, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, original bandmember Tom Leadon, and Randall Marsh, who joined when Mudcrutch first went to Los Angeles in search of a record deal in the early 70s. Now, more than 30 years later, Mudcrutch finally has its debut album. With new Petty songs and a handful of covers, the self-titled disc is both classic rock and a rock classic.

The hits:
“Six Days on the Road” – A magnificent cover that gets Petty back to his roots.
“Crystal River” – This is a pretty interesting song that jams on to grab some Grateful Dead inspiration.
“Lover of the Bayou” – A great cover of The Byrds track.
“June Apple” – This might not turn-on current Petty fans but its a hell of a lot of fun with the picking that reminds you of the good old country duels.

The rest:
“Orphan of the Storm”

Finally:
Mudcrutch is a rock-jam-country band that is surprisingly good. Then again why should we be surprised that a Tom Petty release is good? Well, if someone said that Petty was going to reunite with his pre-Heartbreakers band there has to be some natural pessimism. If you are a Petty fan then you can count yourself a Mudcrutch fan.
